- Age: Treatment works well in patients aged between 18 and over.
- Other cosmetic treatments you are currently receiving: The deoxycholic acid treatments can react with other treatments. Do not attend a session while undergoing other surgical or nonsurgical procedures.
- Medical History: While it’s okay to continue your treatment while taking most medications, it can react with blood thinners such as aspirin. In addition, if you have a bleeding issue or hypertension, discuss it with your doctor.
- Pregnancy: Pregnant and nursing mothers should avoid treatments for the safety of their babies. This is because the deoxycholic acid injection can affect the unborn baby or travel to breast milk, exposing your baby to unnecessary health risks.
Deoxycholic acid destroys fat cells within 4-6 weeks in patients with moderate to severe fat. Therefore, you should be able to see a noticeable reduction within the first month. However, patients with severe fat will need several treatment sessions to dissolve the submental fat completely. Depending on the thickness of your fat tissue, you may need two to four treatments. Each treatment takes about a month to take effect. This treatment can cause serious side effects, possible adverse effects include an uneven smile, facial muscle weakness, nerve injury, and difficulty swallowing. Patients under other cosmetic treatments must discuss this with their healthcare provider before starting their fat dissolving treatment sessions.
These injections can cause swelling, pain, and sometimes numbness at the injection sites and resolve on their own, like any other injection. You can treat these with over-the-counter medicine and ice packs. Don’t engage in strenuous exercise and drink enough water with a balanced diet to speed up the recovery process. Finally, it is essential to note that while the results of fat dissolving treatments are permanent, this treatment does not prevent fat cells from growing elsewhere.
